Languishing- Editorial Page
For my college assignment, I had the opportunity to design an editorial page for a published New York Times article. I wanted to challenge myself and explore the differences between designing for digital and print media, so I experimented with both mediums.
As I worked on the project, I realized that the approach to creatives and typography had to be adapted for each medium. For print, I had to consider factors such as colour saturation and paper texture, while for digital, I had to keep in mind factors such as screen resolution and interactivity.
I thoroughly enjoyed the process of exploring the nuances of each medium and understanding how the design elements contribute to the reader's experience. It was a valuable learning experience that will undoubtedly inform my future design projects.
Concept
While there were many inspiring stories of families coming together and people being productive during the lockdown, the darker side of the pandemic was often overlooked. Many of us experienced periods of languishing, struggling to get out of bed and feeling disconnected from our friends. The lack of social interaction and productivity could lead to feelings of loneliness and anxiety. I wanted to capture all of these emotions in my illustrations, depicting both the bright and dark sides of the pandemic through the use of contrasting colour palettes. By acknowledging the full spectrum of emotions experienced during the lockdown, my illustrations aim to provide a more nuanced and honest reflection of this difficult time.
I used a more direct approach for my digital illustrations. I wanted to make them relatable and instantly recognizable to the reader, knowing that attention spans on digital platforms can be short. The illustrations aim to capture the essence of the emotions and experiences that people go through during the lockdown, without the need for additional metaphors or symbolism. By using bold and vivid colours, I wanted to create an impactful visual representation of the highs and lows of the lockdown experience.
